SUM and SUBSTANCE(HoY 2004)

Hosta `Sum and Substance', lavender, 48", July-August. VERY LARGE-HUGE! Record breaking mounds in some gardens at measuring in at an astounding 48"high by 114"(9 1/2feet!)wide! Even without trying, the average size mound is 31"high by 70"wide. The leaves continue to win blue ribbons in many catagories coming in at 16-20"long and 14-17"wide!(14-17vp); leaf broadly oblong-ovate in shape with a long, distinct tip and deeply lobed margins; leaves moderately to heavily corrugated, cupped up or down; thick substance. Flowers follow suit in size at 3"long by 1 1/2"wide and are generally packed onto the upper 6-10"of the scape. The mastermind of the hosta world, Christopher Columbus of hostadom, PAUL ADEN registered this in 1980. (2004 "Hosta of the Year" by the American Hosta Growers Association)
