  • Model: HOSTUV

Hosta `Tucker Valentine'. (R.Steven) This is Ray Stevens! probably one of if not the longest member of the AHS and editor of the society's flagship publication, The HOSTA Journal. Bob(let's try to not spell his name! just to WIN a GIFT!)explains the HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE of this glossy green, "Ray Stevens and George Schmid were riders on the same BUS going to work(tour) fro thirty years. After discovering a COMMON bond in gardening early on the collaborated to form the Georgia Hosta Society. Ray is (like George) from Tucker, Georgis, and was a gifted hybridizer of DAYLILIES and Hostas--giving each on a Tucker "prefix" to its name. To my knowledge he never sold his hybrids, but RATHER! GIFTED them to FRIENDS. Some are outstanding--and H.`Tucker Valentine' may be his VERY BEST! He gave gave me H.`Tucker Valentine', twenty-five years ago(our Tri-State Hosta Society is Celebrating our 25th year anniversary this year and I am growing Hosta `Silver Anniversary' as a GIFT plant for the meeting! Oh Whaat Fun It IS!)when he was a speaker at the meeting of the Georgia Hosta Society. I do not think any of Stevens' hybrid hostas are available currently in the trade. H.`Tucker Valentine' is the sole representative in the Hosta Library--and it is a modest-sized CONTAINERIZED PLANT in Danny e.'s COLLECTION. The one growing in my yard for twenty-five years(immune to sub-zero temperatures)is 6ft(72")across/wide, and 30"high/tall) with dark, SHINY, HEART-shaped leaves and lovely flowers, and it seems to thrive on benign neglect." Thos ATTENDING the 2018 National Convention in Philadelphia this summer, 20-23 June, 2018, will surely ENJOY Bob's KEYNOTE ADDRESS on the HISTORY of the AHS. He has lived much of it and always PRESENTS witha FLARE of ENTERTAINING HUMOR and twists that CAPTURES and MAINTAINS ATTENTION! Parentage is (H.`Herifu' x H.ventricosa)and is evident in the glossy sheen of the foliage. Hybridizers interested in breeding for tets(not-mis spelled as I often can do), might this be A LINK TO SUCCESS, ploidy is UNknown??? American Hosta Society On-Line Auction 27 Jan,2018 00:14:11
