NIFTY FIFTY

Hosta `Nifty Fifty', lavender, 28", June-July. LARGE. Mounds 25"high by 36"wide. Leaves 12"long by 8"wide(12-14vp); blue early, blue-green season, green by seasons end; yellow margin. We had to get this. We're hosting the 50th anniversary of the American Hosta Society get together. But here in PA we literally have a diner called Nifty Fifty! You guessed it! All it serves is basic GOOD drive-in, checkered blouse, black-tipped cheerleader shoe kinda food! Burgers, fries, and floats! (R.Benedict, 1986. Sport of H.`Dorothy Benedict') Uh-oh, just came across the Hosta Library's notice! many of the leaves are cupped(nice), flowers are clustered at the top of the scape(good to know for a collector), some small leafy bracts and the leaves have some rugosity(excellent old time description for a collector about the leaf formations!). Then they(Bill confirms?)say, "It is a `Dorothy Benedict' STABLE FORM!!!, as is `mean mama' which has a cream center." I guess I really shouldn't put in quotes because I uppercased the stable part! and added that my good friend Bill Meyer, the AHS chemist! likes the analysis as well! Phifty in Philly 2018.
