Dianthus x grationpolitiana `Wicked Witch', black buds open to cherry re-red, 8", April-September. This is a selected "Flower mutation" from D.`Firewitch'(PPA Plant of The Year 2006)as chosen by Plant Delight Nursery(that guru/plantsman/plant hunter/plant finder/hybridizer/tinkerer and ALL AROUND great guy and FRIEND, Tony Avent?)This I like! Not just because of the name and my recent experience with a real life witch? The kind that think/feel they have the power of voodooism! The buds are jet-black but open a bright cheary(oops,Tony says, "Cherry")red. Thr fragrance is that of an angel! The foliage is glaucously bluish. As being a generational mutation of D.`Firewitch' at any time of the year after its initial fluch of blooms there are always sporadic blloms to let you know the witch has not "melted"!We used to grow an earlier one with a black bud but was too tall and tended to fall, as most witches do!(off their broom!and in human terms "off their rocker"and most often during a marriage "off the handle"!Best planted in full sun although a side of the house would work.Any soil.zone 3-9.Thanks, Tony!
