Myrtus `Redside', white, 20-30", August-September. A Cistus Nursery, Sauvie Island, Oregon introduction. A cross between Myrtus communis `Compacta' and Myrtus communis `Anne McDonald'. Large white flowers to 1/2"across coming from RED-tinted stems AND RED-tinted undersides of leaves! Beautiful! And generally compact for a myrtle(considering they get upwards to 10ft!). Herbally speaking the seeds(fruits after flowering)and the flower buds can be crushed and used as a spice. The leaves of myrtle may be added to pork dishes 10 minutes before end of cooking. These both impart a peppery kind of flavor. Frost hardy to 15 degrees. Sun or bright light indoors. zone8 "German Redside Myrtle"
