JEWEL OF THE NILE

Hosta `Jewel of the Nile', lavender, 24-30", June-July. MEDIUM can be large. Mounds 22"high by 24-50"wide. Leaves 8-11.75"long by 6-8.5"wide(12-15vp). The description of these leaves is pretty mush impossible without going on, and on, and on , and on , and on, and on! about EACH LEAF! With that said! OUR DISPLAY SPECIMAN during the 2006 National Convention here in Philly(soon to be repeated for the Phifty in Philly,50 year Convention in 2018!)was CHOSEN FOR THE COVER OF THE HOSTA JOURNAL! A PERFECT specimen! I "humbly" agree! I've seen many a "Jewel of the Niles" and not just on DVD's! to know what a "beauty" should look like after reading a registered description! So, it starts out as: blue-green foliage in the center with a 3/8"wide, golden yellow margin; broadly-ovate-shaped with a long thin tip; leaves moderately wavy, thick-substance and covered with a thin underside bloom; cordate base; petioles pinkish. NOW, what the registration can't describe is the "mutations" that occur on nearly EVERY LEAF. The difference in margins, streaks, centers all differ and ALL ON THE SAME CLUMP! Take a look at the picture! That's a "JEWEL OF THE NILE"! A "jewel' sparkles in all kinds of sunlight! AND WE HAD IT FOR A DECADE!(2000, K.Walek.
