  • Model: SPICER

Spiranthus cernua, white, 12-18", September-November. Strappy, fleshy, basil leaves 3-8"long, up from which spikes of flowers arise late fall. Single tubed flowers are arranged in many spiraled around the stem. Sweetly fragrant on a cool autumn morning. If any hummingbirds are still to be around they find these "Ladies Trusses" with ease! Slowly spreading by underground rhizomes these can form small colonies when happy together. This prefers a moist soil in part shade. If kept moist enough will grow in sun. Sunny bog areas are good. NATIVE! Native to Illinois but found all along the East Coast. Its habit is moist sandy prairies, sandy savannas, areas adjacent to paths in sandy woodlands, shrubby bogs, sandy pannes near lakes, gravelly seeps, limestone glades, bluffs, sandy pits, ditches, and abandoned fields. Everywhere! To recognize this from other species the flowers have a downward curve to them lending to the common name "Nodding Lady Trusses"
