Verbena bonariensis, purple, 36", June-December. Perennial re-seeder. The BEST of the BEST for butterflys! Stiff stems and small, packed heads of flowers. I would debate what comes 1st for butterflies. This or Asclepias tuberosa!(Butterfly Weed) This though blooms ALL season! Re-seeds somewhat freely but roots or very surfacible(shallow)so you can pull them up anywhere you don't like one! BUT they add color throughout the gardena dn yard. Just where you wouldn't thin anyting would come up(crevices in pavement, clay, under trees you never thought of having a flower under!,along your driveway)AND all the time attracting a butterfly, Monarch, Swallowtail, that "black one", "that little white one". NATIVE! Must have, garden or no garden.! zone4
