Model: HOSBOA
Hosta `Because Of Art'(ORIGINATOR'S STOCK) American Hosta Society On-Line Auction 27 January 2018. Closed at 23:52:57 seconds. From "Dabber". Nick Ternes's description captures the features and history of the first time ever offered plant. WINNER WILL RECEIVE a division with at least 2 eyes of THee World of Hosta `Because of Art'(OS!!!). This Hosta is named for Arthur Degnitz, the man completely responsible for Nick being involved with the genus Hosta. Really, it's ALL HIS FAULT! Nick didn't particularly like or dislike Hostas before WORKING with Art. He(Art)headed up the department at the nursery WHere Nick eventually became MANAGER. His(Nick's)excitement and PASSION for his favorite plants were OBVIOUSLY CONTAGIOUS!, he(Nick)could easily sell a COUPLE dozen*that's like a dozen of eggs,12) to nearly any gardener(BELIEVER). Even I started BUYING tHem, take in by their EASE of CULTURE and endless forms and colors. Eventually, Nick became interested in hybridizing and he(Art) GIFTED! Nick this plant ALONG WITH several others. This Hosta sickness Nick has, it's all BECAUSE of Art! This is a pollinated seedling of H.yingeri that Art acquired from Chuck Finkle. At THee THyme it wasn't terribly impressive. looking BASICALLY like a H.yingeri in HABIT BUT NOT FLOWER! The backs were slightly glaucous and Nick has an interest in the species or so THOUGHT HE HAD PLANTED. It grew and TRANSFORMED over MANY YEARS to be a medium-large mound of glossy, dark green, POINTED leaves with nice WHite Backs. The flowers are lavender with a slightly PINKISH tinge and held on scapes that EMERGE from the mound NEARLY SIDEWAYS! Flower habit is reminiscent(od Dad) of H.kikutii. This is a LATE BLOOMING species, the timing coincides with H.yingeri, H.kikutii var.leuconata, and other late Hostas for Nick. SO: far, this has never formed seed pods for Nick. The pollen looks viable but Nick has not tried it in hybridizing yet. This plant has VEVER BEEN SHARED with anyone else and Nick is going to register this in the NEAR FUTURE. Nick will be making a few final measurements, OBSERVATIONS, and PICTURES early in 2018 after he will DIVIDED it and pot it for an increase and sale(can find one!). Nick expects to have a piece cut apart for sometime in June 2018. This FIRST-EVER OFFER is DONATED! by Nick Ternes of Botanophilia Llc. (N. Ternes,2018) MEDIUM-LARGE. Mounds 18" high by 42" wide. Leaves 11" long by 6" wide(6-7vp); Dark green leaves are long and glossy with WHITE backs. Glaucous petioles, very shiny, lightly corrugated overall. Pale lavender, 24-30", September.
