GUNTHER'S PRIZE(OS!)

Hosta `Gunther's Prize', lavender, 42", July-August. Sport of H.`Sun and Substance' found by Bob Solberg, Green Hill Farm. A "special auction" was held in the vending room at an AHS national convention center. Gunther Stark was simply NOT to bu outbid and walked off with the FIRST and ONLY piece of the plant made available at the time. Named by and for Gunther Stark, this sport of `Sum and Substance' has the same growth habits(except VERY SLOW to multiply specimen eyes!)but is HEAVILY MOTTLED, SPLASHED, and STEAKS of GOLD(not "Streets of Gold"). I had purchased an ORIGINAL division from Gunther Stark at the AHS National convention in Ohio in 2005 for $232.00(5"pot). We had it on display(planted in out Alphabetical Display Garden for the AHS National convention held HERE at Russell Gardens Wholesale and our famous Pig Roast with 4 grilling stands)and had it marked off with CAUTION tape! A Mature specimen. Over the next a couple years I gave(sold 2)9 eyes to friends, and gave my final eye to a good friend, with confidence he could grow it on in his garden si I would always know where Gunther was lerking!
WELL, here comes along the AHS On-line Auction 2017! Last listing! `Gunther's Prize' and what a specimen! Needless to say, this time, Alan was NOT to be OUTBID. With a computer in front of that responds with a click of a button and a frig 3 steps away that responds with another click of another kind(click-pop-and-klug,klug,chugg). WE GOT IT! I'm getting another chance at a "PIECE OF os!". From Elim Hosta 8/31/17. No need t re-describe anything other than Original Stock generally and simply means, "from the hybridizer/originator", even if it is passed on thru the "friendship network"! Elim Hosta's are our friends! that collect Original Stock as well!
