SORGHASTRUM nutans

Sorghastrum nutans `Indian Steel', tan-colored spikes, 35-59", August-October. Thick clumps of steely blue-green leaves with long narrow panicles. This is one of the most beautiful and characteristic grasses of the North American tallgrass prairie. This is one of the most prevelent grasses next to the bluestem. Found on open prairies, dry slopes, and open woods from Maine to North Dakota, south to Florida, Arizona, and Mexico. The flowers spikes have conspicuous bright yellow pollen sacs makeing them very attractive and a standout in cut flower arrangements both fresh and dried. Sun, all soils, even clay. zone4
