Pachysandra procumbens `Silver Streak', white and reddish flowers below the foliage which gets to 6-8"high, mottled leaves. This is a selection from Mt.Cuba Center said to have a stronger silver-overlay than the species? This is a herbaceous(evergreen)perennial native groundcover. The leaves are brownish and mottled with light and dark areas. The leaf stem is recumbent and often passes under leaf litter so that the leaves show up some distance from the flowers or not at all at the time of flowering. The flowers are irregular in shape. Blooms first appear in early spring and continue thru mid winter! The light colored male flowers cover most of the flower stalk while the female flowers are few and at the very bottom. The flowers are sometimes hidden under the leaf litter. The flowering fruit capsule is 3/8"long with 2-4 pointed beaks. Its natural habitat is under hardwoods in moist calcium rich soils. It's NATIVE range is from Florida north to PENNSYLVANIA(Allegheny County?!)and west to Louisiana. Rarely found in the south. Shade, heavy shade, slow to form a complete mass. zone4
