  • Model: ASTEJI4

Aster tataricus `Jindai', lavender, 36-50", September-November. Huge leaves emerge in spring(up to 2'(ft)long, oblonglly oval, rough and course, creating a large sometimes massive patchand henceforth in fall "Up from the grave" they arise! Thick stems to where at there ends EXPLODE a tightly loose, half umbel-like, half spike-like, and all spray-like myriad of daiseis! This is a "skyscraper" for butterflies. These flowers persist until frost! And their cut-flower value is UNMATCHED!!! Although not native, this is considered by me as PATRIOTIC as our veterans of Pearl Harbor! Why? because it was found by a dear friend of my father and whom I was introduced to and have continued in his enthusiasm of "finding" "different" plants among the masses, Rick Darke! And also giving friendly consideration to his friend in botany, Skip March. The two of them noticed this particular one standing erect by itself among the massive patch at the Jin Dai Botanical Garden in Japan, and a bit more "dwarf"(as the species is known to reach 9ft!!!)and hence removed its rooting and wha-la! We have, one of my favorite asters to grace this land! A must! for any cutting garden, specimen for show in fall, butterfly garden, especially childrens, school, arboretum, anywhere that commands attention and ooos and aahgs! Hardy to zone4-8. Tolerates and thrives in both droughts and diluges. Sun and all soils! As its shorter stature is innate is will thrive in dry shade if needed. "Tatarian Daisy"
