Angelica archangelica.Hardy biennial growing 5-8ft with stout, hollow stems and broad, lobed leaves. Honey-scented, large green flowers resembling fennel. Prefers partial shade and cool, damp garden soil. Stems can be candied and used as cake decorations. Seeds or the dry root can be infused and taken as a tea. The seeds are also used to flavor drinks, especially gin. Biennial, zone 6. When purchasing this plant from us, it will grow about 2 feet the first year and then as high as 6 feet the second and start its biennial habit. Although listed as biennial you WILL get Angelica every year because of its reseeding trait. To clarify its use, it is used throughout Europe as a SUGAR substitute(means this herb has a sweetened taste).A most useful way of using this is to cook it with Rhubarb! It reduces the tartness and sweetens the Rhubarb. Every day use within the gardening world, and the easiest beyond easy, is to cut the stems into 1/2" pieces, boil them for minute and candy them(roll them in sugar, honey, syrup, or even hot chocolate/fudge). This makes for an addicting snack!
