Pycnanthemum incanum, white sometime tinged lavender, 24-36", July-September. Easily grown in average to dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part-shade. Best flowering in full sun. A vigorous and sometimes aggressive grower which spreads by long rhizomes. If naturalizing is unwanted, prune roots in spring with a spade(this means don't plant this in your garden border if you do not want it to take over!). This is a "purpose" plant. Like the bee-keepers! This is #1 pollinator for honeybees and is "seriously" patch forming(up to 12ft aide!). When it flowers it attracts the most bees known to that movie"Bees!"only these aren't African Killer Bees, these are "good" bees that gives our sweet honey "American Side". This species, called "Hoary Mountain Mint" is distinguished by the hoary/whitish appearance of the upper leaves and bracts beneath the tiered flower clusters. Well-branched with square stems. Broad-ovate, toothed leaves(up to 3"long)are hoary beneath. Small, two-lipped, flowers with purple spotting on the lower lip bloom in tiered terminal and auxilllary clusters. All parts of this plant emit a strong, spearmint-like aroma when touched or leaves are crushed. Leaves are used to flavor teas. This one of the best benefitials for butterflies, moths, predatory wasps, and honeybees! Dense blossoms. Found in dry open woods, thickets, and fields along the eastern United States from Maine to Illinois, south to eastern Texas and northern Florida. zone4-8
