Phlox maculata, pink, 20-28", July-just into September. Upright, clump forming, lightly rhizomatous perennial. Sweet fragrance. Butterfly attractor. Flowers are densely arranged in large cylindrical, terminal clusters atop stiff "red-spotted" stems. It's technical common name is "Spotted Phlox", but is most often mis-commonly referred to as 'Wild Sweet William". For the gardening scholars, "maculata" means spotted in Latin. Lance-shaped, dark green, smooth leaves opposite each other. Great fresh cut flower. Not only attracts butterflies, but birds and hummingbirds alike! Full sun to light shade. NATIVE to eastern United States typically in moist meadows, low woods and riverbanks.
